Leasing for UK companies with overseas directors

A UK-registered company, trading properly, with directors who happen to live abroad. Most funders decline this on policy alone. It is entirely placeable with the right one.

In short

Many UK vehicle funders require at least one UK-resident director and will decline a company without one, regardless of how strong the business is. This is an internal policy rather than a legal restriction. Specialist funders underwrite UK-registered companies with entirely overseas directorships, based on the company's trading position, its UK banking, its ownership structure and, typically, a larger initial payment. Expect more documentation and a longer approval timeline than a standard application.

The real obstacle

Why the automatic decline happens

It comes down to enforcement and identity verification, not to any judgement about your business.

Funders build their processes around UK-resident individuals: electoral roll checks, UK credit files, UK address history, and — if things go wrong — UK legal recourse against a guarantor. A director resident in Dubai, Dublin or Delhi breaks all four assumptions at once. Rather than build a process for it, most funders simply exclude it.

The funders we use have built that process. It involves more documentation and takes longer, but it produces approvals rather than automatic rejections.

Things that make the case stronger

Genuine UK operations

UK staff, a UK office, UK customers. Evidence that the company is trading here rather than registered here.

A larger initial payment

The most reliable lever in any specialist case. It directly reduces the funder's exposure.

A UK-resident guarantor

If any director, shareholder or senior employee is UK resident and willing to guarantee, it simplifies the case considerably.

Established banking

A UK business bank account with a meaningful transaction history carries real weight when the credit file is thin.

A shorter term

Six or twelve months is far easier to underwrite than four years. Short-term is an advantage here, not a compromise.

Complete paperwork first time

Incomplete overseas documentation is the single biggest cause of delay. Get certified copies before you start.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Many mainstream funders require at least one UK-resident director and decline anything else automatically, but that is a policy position rather than a legal requirement. Specialist funders will underwrite a UK-registered company whose directors live abroad, given the right documentation and usually a larger initial payment.

Typically: UK company registration details, the full director register with residential addresses, certified identity documents for each director, proof of the company's UK trading address, business bank statements, and details of the ownership structure. Documents in other languages may need certified translation.

Not for the funders we use. Where a UK-resident director does exist it usually simplifies the case considerably, so it is worth mentioning if you have one — but it is not a requirement.

An authorised signatory of the company, which may be an overseas director. Some funders require a personal guarantee from a director, and a guarantee from a non-UK-resident director is more complex to enforce — which is one reason the initial payment is often higher instead.

Longer than a standard case. Identity verification for overseas residents, document certification and translation all add time. Allow a couple of weeks rather than a couple of days, and start earlier than you think you need to.
