Non-status leasing

For individuals and businesses that do not fit standard credit-assessment criteria. Not a judgement on how you have handled credit — usually just a situation an automated system cannot read.

In short

Non-status leasing is for individuals and companies that do not fit the standard criteria used for credit assessments. It is not a product for adverse credit — it exists because mainstream funders apply rigid criteria that cannot interpret a legitimate but unusual situation: a new company with no trading results, an overseas parent company, foreign directors who cannot be verified in the UK, or someone with no UK credit history after years abroad. We have supported non-status customers since 2007, primarily through our car subscription and short-term lease fleet. A credit check is still carried out, and acceptance is not guaranteed.

Common situations

Who non-status leasing is for

These are the circumstances that trigger an automatic decline from a mainstream funder, and none of them says anything about how you have handled credit.

Business

Personal

  • Expat or overseas visitor
  • Returning to the UK after living or working abroad
  • No UK credit history
  • Director of a foreign company
  • Director of a new start-up business
  • Only just turned 18, with no history yet

Background

Why funders decline these

Businesses and private individuals increasingly find themselves unable to obtain credit for contract hire, leasing or even hire purchase — and often cannot work out why.

There was a time when the large leasing companies and funders would accept almost any application. They were then badly caught out by write-offs and vehicle repossessions, and tightened criteria sharply. They now want to see positive balance sheets, three years of payments made on time, and credit scores that plenty of genuinely wealthy people do not have.

None of that is a judgement on you. It is a criteria problem, and criteria problems have solutions.

Straight answer

Do you offer no credit check leasing?

No — and be wary of anyone who says they do. A credit check is run for both personal and business applications. Where a business applies, the directors are checked as well.

What is different about a non-status application is who reads it. Tell us at the outset that you need a non-status lease and it goes to specialist underwriters who assess every applicant case by case, rather than to a system that rejects anything outside its criteria.

They are looking for two things: affordability and stability. If we can see that you can afford the vehicle, the answer could well be yes.

Acceptance is not guaranteed. We can normally help in most circumstances — a change of employment, a recent divorce, a few missed payments — but the underwriters make the decision, not us.

Criteria

What you will need

Having these ready makes a non-status application considerably faster.

Private individual

  • Driving licence showing your current address
  • Three years or more of address history
  • Three years or more of employment history
  • Proof of address, such as a utility bill dated within the last three months
  • Wage slip clearly showing income
  • Bank statements clearly showing income and expenditure
  • SA302, where applicable

Business

  • Director's driving licence showing current address
  • Director's proof of address, dated within three months
  • Business bank statements — we may request 1 to 12 months
  • Management accounts, on request
  • Director's guarantee availability, if required
  • Details of your website
  • Previous or other company appointments, if required

Pricing

What terms will I be offered?

The advertised monthly rate on our short-term leases does not change for non-status customers. What the underwriters may adjust are the terms attached to it. Where they assess the risk as higher, they will typically ask for additional security rather than a higher monthly payment. That could include:

  • A higher documentation fee
  • A higher initial rental
  • A terminal pause agreement
  • A refundable deposit or bond
  • A guarantee and indemnity
  • A charge or debenture on property

Or a combination of several of the above. Whatever is proposed is set out clearly once acceptance comes through, and you are not obliged in any way to accept it.

Vehicles, credit limits and what happens next

Which vehicles?
It depends on the underwriters. Sometimes the full short-term lease range is available, sometimes a selection. You are usually given a reference number to check against individual vehicle offers.
Credit limit
Underwriters set a credit limit for every customer, non-status or prime, based on affordability and stability reporting alongside your credit files.
Which fleet
Non-status agreements are supplied primarily through our car subscription and short-term lease fleet, which is why the terms are shorter and the structure more flexible.
Missed payments
Failure to pay results in termination. If a Direct Debit bounces and is not settled within 48 hours, we will arrange collection of the vehicle and bill accordingly.
Since when
We have been helping non-status customers since 2007.

Frequently asked questions

Non-status leasing is for individuals and companies that do not fit the standard criteria used for credit assessments. It is not about poor payment history — it is about situations a mainstream funder's criteria simply cannot read: a company with no trading results, an overseas parent, foreign directors who cannot be verified in the UK, or a person with no UK credit history because they have been living abroad. We handle these through our short-term lease and car subscription fleet.

No. We do not offer no-credit-check leasing and neither does anyone else operating legitimately. A credit check is run for both personal and business applications, and for a business the directors are checked too. What is different about a non-status application is that specialist underwriters assess it case by case rather than a system rejecting it automatically. They are looking for affordability and stability.

No. Acceptance is never guaranteed. We can normally help in most circumstances, but the underwriters make the decision and they need to see that the vehicle is affordable and that your situation is stable. Tell us up front that you need a non-status application and we will route it to the right underwriters rather than have it declined by an automated system.

Depending on the case, underwriters may ask for a higher documentation fee, a higher initial rental, a terminal pause agreement, a refundable deposit or bond, a guarantee and indemnity, a charge or debenture on property, or a combination of these. Any terms are set out clearly once acceptance comes through, and you are under no obligation to accept them.

Yes. Underwriters set a credit limit for every customer, non-status or prime. It is determined from affordability and stability reporting alongside your current credit files from the credit reference agencies.

It is important to be clear about this. Failure to pay results in termination of the contract. If a Direct Debit bounces and is not settled within 48 hours, we will arrange collection of the vehicle and bill accordingly.
